World Business Chicago Creative Director Jake Trussell Talks Side Hustles, Brands, and Job Creation

Picture a DJ, part-time web designer, musician, and record label owner in your mind.  You probably did not picture a clean-shaven businessman suited up to create jobs in Chicago’s global landscape.  However, Creative Director Jake Trussell is a comprehensive leader in today’s sector through his vast background with side hustles, which ultimately led him to his role with World Business Chicago.  Trussell recently sat down with the Northwestern community to discuss career trajectories, initiatives of World Business Chicago, and how to navigate the professional waters of creative enterprises.

Lin Yuan Aspires to Build a Career in Advertising

Lin Yuan first became interested in advertising as an undergraduate at the University of Illinois while taking a course fittingly called “Introduction to Advertising.”

MSLCE Students Learn Strategies for Successful Television Production and Development

Students in Dr. AJ Christian’s Digital Television class recently wrapped up a ten-week exploration into the ever-changing face of the television industry while learning strategies to develop their own ideas into reality.

Local Business Leaders Emphasize the Importance of Effective Business Planning to MSLCE Students

The cornerstone of Cory Sandrock’s Economics of Creative Enterprises class is the careful crafting and development of a business plan to be presented at the culmination of the term. As students learn firsthand the dynamic tension between managing an organization as a creative leader while also considering the financial questions that come with running any business, Professor Sandrock invited two local business leaders to discuss the importance of a clear and well executed business plan when seeking capital from investors and financial
institutions.

Students Learn to Speak the Language of Finance in Economics of Creative Enterprises Course

Many MSLCE students enter the program with a plethora of creative business ideas, but how do you convince investors to fund your project? This quarter, students learned how speak the language of finance through professor Cory Sandrock’s course, Economics of Creative Enterprises. Topics in economics, accounting, external finance needed (EFN), and valuation culminated with a final project that required students to create new business ideas and its financial statements. MSLCE Students get Unforgettable Inside Look of LA

The MSLCE Trek to Los Angeles gave a group of 18 student an unforgettable inside look of Hollywood, talent agencies, studios, production companies and more. The opportunity to meet with the industry’s top leaders allowed students to gain incredible insight into what it takes to be successful in the film and television industry. “What really stood out to me was the value of networking. Knowing people is the cornerstone of success in the entertainment industry and you have to have perseverance to make it in LA,” said Ben Shiplett, MSLCE Student.

Adrian Alea Aspires to Tell Powerful, Musical Stories

Adrian Alea first fell in love with the arts as a kid being driven around in his mother’s car, while the soundtracks to renowned musicals would play in the background. The MSLCE student remembers first hearing Man of La Mancha, Evita, Mamma Mia, Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, and The Phantom of the Opera – all while heading to elementary school.

Career Speed Dating at EPICS Theatre + Performing Arts Industry Connect Event

Since September, MSLCE students have been working diligently to prepare themselves for their new careers after graduating. Refining resumes, honing management skills, and perhaps most importantly, networking. The students have had several chances to sit down and talk with great leaders from various creative industries to get their insight and advice on building a successful career and have jumped at every opportunity. Speaking with a great creative voice is incredibly valuable, but can you imagine getting to do so with 8 at once? Students got to do just that the other night at an Industry Connect event hosted by Northwestern’s EPICS (External Programs, Internships, and Career Services) Office. (more…)

Students Absorb Company Culture at Leo Burnett

If it wasn’t for his optimism, Leo Burnett, the world-renowned advertising agency, would probably not exist today.

MSLCE students recently had the opportunity to visit the Leo Burnett company in downtown Chicago, as part of the quarterly site visit component of the program. Interacting with VP Account Director, Erin Fallon Ingram; SVP Director from the optimization team, Garrick Bradley; and two members of talent management team, students got a feel for the working environment of Leo Burnett. Second City Leaders Share Stories, Insights About Chicago Institution with MSLCE Students

Ask any stranger on the street and they may give you different examples of what Chicago, Illinois is most known for. Some may tell you it’s the Cubs, some may tell you it’s the cold weather, and some may tell you it’s the architecture. For many entertainers and performers however, Chicago is the nation’s capital for comedy and the epicenter is the iconic Second City theatre in the heart of Old Town. Several students in the MSLCE program recently got a chance to sit down with some of the top leaders at the institution where comedy greats like Chris Farley, Tina Fey, and Northwestern alum Stephen Colbert got their start.

The group of students enjoyed an in-depth panel discussion led by Artistic Director Matt Hovde and also including VP of Production Jen Hoyt, VP of Applied Improvisation Kelly Leonard, Head of the Harold Ramis Film School Jack Newell, and head of the Directing Program and Comedy Studies Anne Libera.
