In February, MSLCE Professor Rick Morris gave his perspective on Paramount’s blockbuster acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery for Variety.
‘David Ellison Scares the S— Out of Me’: How Paramount Beat Out Netflix, Won Warner Bros. and Will Change Hollywood Forever, an inside look at the $110 billion deal features a wide range of perspectives, from industry executives to media analysts, diving into the many questions posed by such a massive move.
Professor Morris brought the same expertise he brings to his MSLCE course, Arts and Entertainment Law and Ethics, assessing the financial realities of the deal. “Debt is debt,” he says. “Debt will stop them from taking new initiatives, from investing in content, and it’ll take a period of time to work off. And many companies fail at working off the debt, and that is part of the reason that Warner Bros. is for sale.”
Reflecting on the experience with MSLCE, Professor Morris was appreciative of the opportunity to add to the iconic trade publication’s report. “It is special to me because there is nothing like Variety.” he said. “They have used me on background a couple of times in recent years, but this is the first visible quote.”
