Freda Love Smith

Freda Love Smith holds an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Northwestern University and an MA in Fiction from Nottingham Trent University in the UK. She has worked in the music industry for over thirty years as a drummer and songwriter, working with bands including Blake Babies, Mysteries of Life, and Sunshine Boys, and her songs have been licensed by Walt Disney Pictures, Something Fierce, and American Airlines. Smith is also a journalist and nonfiction writer, whose publications include the books Red Velvet Underground (2015) and I Quit Everything (2023). She is the Programming Director of Bookends University, a community education program housed in Evanston’s Bookends & Beginnings bookstore. In addition to teaching for MSLCE, she teaches at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts and in the School of Professional Studies at Northwestern.
